Beza Mahafaly
The Special Reserve of Beza Mahafaly is in the Southwest. This is the only protected area of the National Network that includesd of a gallery forest. GPS: South latitudes 23°38’60”and 23°41’20”and the East longitudes 44° 34’20”

The Special Reserve of Beza Mahafaly is located in the South Western part of Madagascar, in the Region Atsimo Andrefana. It is 35 km Northeast of Betioky. It is a Reserve of 600 ha, the second smallest protected area in Madagascar, after the Special Reserve of Nosy Mangabe.

The fauna

102 species of birds as well as 21 species of mammals, 39 species of reptiles and amphibians have been documented within this reserve. The herpetofauna composition is characteristic of the sub-arid dry forest of the southwestern region of Madagascar. The composition is mostly represented by reptiles such as the iguana Chalarodon madagascariensis (Dangalia), Oplurus cyclurus and O. saxicola (Sitry vato or razanboay), the gecko like Blaesodactylus sakalava and Phelsuma mutabilis. Snakes are also represented with several species such as Mimophis mahfalensis, Leioheterodon madagascariensis and Stenophis pseudograniluceps. An important population of the crytically endangered species of radiated tortoise Astrochelys radiata is encountered within the reserve has been recorded in Beza Mahafaly.

Two species which have a small range of distribution are very common at Beza Mahafaly. The two species are Archbold’s newtonia Newtonia archboldi and Lafresnaye’s vanga Xenopirostris xenopirostris. The Madagascar sparrowhawk Accipiter madagascariensis, an endemic raptor of Madagascar and classified as threatened species is also presented at the site.

The Reserve is home to large populations of lemurs (Lemur catta, Propithecus verreauxi, griseorufus Microcebus, Lepilemur), which are subject to monitoring activities and research by international research institutions. So visitors should expect to see some animals with devices of follow-up as necklaces or marking…

The flora

These species of flora are the most visible: Alluaudia procera, Fantiolitse; Cedrelopsis grevei; Pachypodium geayi, Vontake and Tamarindus indica, Kily.

The inventory identified 210 species of flora that belong to 49 families.

Travel shrewd...

Wear good bush shoes and protect yourselves from the heat. The temperature goes up to 42°C in Beza Mahafaly. Bring packs of mineral water in your luggages. The well water is used in the camp, it is slightly salty. Also, it is necessary to have a water filter.

The nearest banks are in Toliary.  In case of emergency, the nearest health centers are closed Beavoha, is 12 km north east of the Reserve and in Betioky Sud 35km Southwest of the Reserve. Telephone networks of Zain and  Telma are available in Betioky.

The story of a Special Reserve

Contrary to most protected areas of the National Network where the initiative of the creation emanated from the state, that of the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve was the work of a Malagasy formation institution (ESSA-Forests). The two parcels have been offered in 1978 by the community of Beavoha on which Beza Mahafaly depends, in order to become a land of application and research for the students. Several collaborations were born along with this initiative with the American universities like Yale and Washington. These two parcels that now constitute the Special Reserve of Beza Mahafaly became a Special Reserve in 1986. Since the Program Environmental III, the Special Reserve of Beza Mahafaly has been directly managed by Madagascar National Parks.

A gallery forest

Two parcels of about 10km of distance form the Special Reserve of Beza Mahafaly. The first parcel is a forest gallery of 80 ha that borders along the Sakamena river. This forest commonly called "baiboho" is on an alluvionar recent soil.

The second parcel is located in the South West from the first. It is a lined xerophyllous plant species of deciduous forest. It is sometimes seen on a soil of tropical and craggy ferruginous type with red sands and abrupt slopes. A transition forest, closer to gallery forest in shape and composition has connected the two parcels. The Reserve also holds quite a lot of species of lemurs like Lemur catta and Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi. These two lemurs are supervised permanently and are the subject of study of the international research institutions.

This gallery forest, these lined xerophyllous plants , its vegetation of transition and its lemurs make the interest of Beza Mahafaly in the network of the Malagasy protected areas. But the Reserve doesn't escape from threats. It is very often exposed to bush fires, illicit cut of rare woods, poaching of radiated turtles and bird, hunting destined for human consumption and collection of secondary products.
