Ankarana
The Ankarana National Park is in the north part, in the Region of Diana. The Tsingy, sacred lake, botanical trail, canyons and dolines of Andohalambo, underground cave of stalactites and stalagmites, bats, or crocodiles make the singularity of the park. It is the biggest underground network of Africa. It is a park of the great adventures between wild and mystical nature. GPS 12° 50’ - 13° 01’ of South latitude and 49° 01’ - 49° 14’ of East longitude.

The park of Ankarana spreads over 18,225 ha. Ankarana is the western extension of a chalky massif of the medium Jurassic that emerges from a basaltic plain located above 50m over the sea level. The plateau, that is a greatly eroded karst formation in surface, is constituted by a lapiaz of Tsingy.

The fauna

The biological inventories of Ankarana reported 50 herpetofauna species with 40 reptiles and 10 amphibians. Several species are endemic to this region and few of them are classified among threatened species, and important number of them has a limited distribution range. Among these particular species are the rock dwelling frog Tsingymantis antitra (Vulnerable), the ground boa Acrantophis madagascariensis (Vulnerable),the snakes Alluaudina mocquardi and Heteroliodon lava (known only from Ankarana). The biological inventories also reported 96 species of birds, 50 species of mollusks and a huge number of snails of The tsingy. 14 species of bats, either the half of the bats of Madagascar lives in the underground cave of Ankarana. Two among them are the smallest and biggest bats of the world: the Megachiroptere and the Microchiroptere.

11 species of lemurs live in Ankarana. Besides, it is in this park that the famous Propithecus perrieri, known under the vernacular name of Black Sifaka was seen for the last time by the agents of the park in 1995 and 1996. Meanwhile, the presence of the" Dwarf Microcebus " Microcebus myoxinus still needs to be to reconfirmed.

The best fauna of Ankarana

1. Eulemur coronatus is a crowned head lemur whose male has a dark brown fur. This species is sexually dichromatic. It prowls in the forest canyon and close to the camping, on the Green Lake track. We have more luck to see it in morning or between 3p.m and 5 p.m.

2. Eulemur sanfordi. This species is also sexually dichromatic. Lemur, bushy hair onbeforeprint the head and whose male has a collar of beard. We can admire it on the Green Lake track, in the Camp of Andrafiabe surroundings, in morning or between 3p.m and 5p.m.

3. Uroplatus henkeli. nocturnal flat-tailed gecko nocturne with dermal fringes along the body and members. This animal present perfect mimetism with its substrat.

4. Crocodylus niloticus. It is a black crocodile with short muzzle. All of its body is dived in water except the eyes and the nose. We can find it in the underground cave of the crocodiles, all day in dry season.

5. Madagascar Crested Ibis Lophotibis cristata. It is an endemic and threatened species. bird of stature bent. Its feather is red and white. Its tail is short. Lone, this bird lives in the outskirts of the green lake, in the big forest canyonbeforeprint.

The flora

At least 330 plant species are known in Ankarana. Most trees carry the deciduous leaves and many bloom from September to November. Several endemic species of the far north meet in Ankarana: Pachypodium baronia, Adansonia perrieri, Delonyx velutina, Hildegardia erythosyphon.

Several types of plant formations distinguish themselves inside the park. A Xerophyte vegetations on the Tsingy, these plants are adapted to droughts.

The forests that are formed themselves in the gorge are the richest in diversity of the species. The most typical are Ficuses of the Morcacea family , Andansonia of the Bombacacea family, and Pandanus, of the Pandanaceae family. These forests are always green in general and are found in the canyons, safe from the wind.

We can also see the raised savannas made of Commiphora of the Burseracea family, Hildegardias of the Sterculiacea family. The canopy culminates over 20 meters. It is the kind of well-known forests in the west of Madagascar.

The best flora of Ankarana

1. Adansonia madagascarensis. This endemic baobab dominates the track of the Turrets of Tsingy and the one of the loss of the rivers.

2. Euphorbia ankaranensis is a vegetation of The tsingy, a grass of very rough and spiny trunk. It is endemic to the Reserve, Its flower is red. We can see it on the Tsingy, growing between the rocks.

3. Adenia lapiazicola. This liana in the shape of pack of demijohn serves as a reserve of water in dry season. We can see it onbeforeprint the Tsingy, between the rocks.

4. Commiphora sp. Better known as the ”tree that peels"or" vazaha tree ". It is a rough trunk which peels during the dry seasonbeforeprint. We can see it onbeforeprint the Tsingy and in the dense forest.

Travel shrewd...

For your stay in Ankarana, wear good walking shoes, light clothes and a hat. Don't forget to bring mineral water in bottle and a lamp torch for your nocturnal visits.  You can take some refreshment in a private restaurant at the entry of the Park by ordering in advance. You can also cook in the camping of the park, but it is necessary to carry what is necessary and get the stock at the market of Ambilobe.
The nearest bank is in Ambilobe. Health Centers are in Ambilobe, Tanambao - Marivorahona and Antsaravibe. Ambilobe is covered with the telephone networks of Zain, Orange and Telma. There is call point at the East entry of Ankarana.

The history of the Park

In 1956, Ankarana became a National Park under the management of the Direction of Waters and Forests, by the slant of the Forest Cantonment of Ambilobe.

An underground life

It is a little particular park because it preserves under the Tsingy the biggest network of aquatic underground, and its different habitats of Africa. This underground system is a reservoir of water for the West coastline. Three rivers nourish this reservoir: the Ankarana to the North, the Besaboba in the East and the Mananjeba in the South. They entrance inside the massif through the pores and their ulterior courses remain currently unknown. Another river, the Antegnan'Ankarana, takes source in the South of the Park.

The Antegnan'Ankarana clears in Ambavan'Ankarana, a village of fishers. This village became lately complex of aquaculture of shrimps by the Las Gambas of the LGA Ankarana, a complex that offers auspicious conditions to the life of the submarine fauna.

In the National Park of Ankarana, the conservation is especially concentrated on the dense dry forest where grows an endemic vegetation; onthe forest of Canyon that is an unique habitat in the ecoregion of the west; its freshness and humidity attract many herpetofauna; and finaly on the Tsingy, a lead light ecotourism and shelters of several species unfortunately a little known and that could increase the biologic diversity of the Reserve.

The threat of the sapphires

Although it is a protected area, the Park of Ankarana can't escape the wild exploitation that could ruin its biodiversity. The surexploitation of sapphire is the most serious threat. The uncontrolled presence of the researchers of sapphire in Ankarana entails another massive exploitation which is also dangerous : the selective cut of precious wood and construction’s wood as Palissander, Ebony wood, Zanthoxylum or fahavalonkazo, Cordyla madagascariensis or Madiroala, Macarisia lanceolata or Hazomalagny and Canarium sp or Ramy. The dense forest and a part of the big forest canyon are especially affected by this wild exploitation.

In addition, “more traditionnal” threats but serious rage in the Park : bushfires to clean certain areas of culture and to renew the livestock grazing, raving of zebus that comes in the Park, no to graze but to…escape from the heat and finally hunting (Tenrecs, diurnal lemurs, Crested Ibis, are the largest games).

A forest that extends to other forests

The Antakarana live in the bordering Communes of the Park: Andranotolohiny, Marovato-Ivanga, Ampasimbengy. Generating activities of incomes have been created to limit their direct dependence on the forest resources. The villagers are engaged in apiculture, in chicken breeding and the cultivation of vegetables such as beans.

Ankarana has a dry tropical climate. The dry season spreads from April to November with a temperature that can reach up to 36.2° C in March and 13.5° C in June. Four corridors link up Ankarana’s forests with other zones of vegetation. Thus, Ankarana is connected with the forest of the Amber Mountain by two corridors close to the villages of Marovato-Ivanga and Tsarakibanies. A third passageway prolongs the forest of Ankarana with the one of Analamerana in the East. Finally, a fourth one assures the link of the blocks of forests in the East and in the Southeast of the Park with the forest of Andavakoera
