Marotandrano
The Marotandrano Special Reserve is located in the Northern part of Madagascar it is between 16° 09' 3'' and 16° 38' 24'' of South latitude - 48° 24' and 48° 48' of East longitude .

Marotandro, 42 200ha are in the limit of the regions of Sofia and Alaotra Mangoro is 250 km from Antsohihy.

The fauna

12 species of lemurs, 140 species of birds, 19 species of amphibian and 16 species of reptiles was identified in Marotandro. For the lemurs, seven species have been listed but these latter, like Varecia variegata and Indri Indri are victims of poachings.

Among the birds, 56 species are endemic. Two species are in danger and six vulnerable ones. The presence of the Serpent Eagle and the Soimanga which is a very rare species in Madagascar is an asset for the reserve of Marotandro.

Eleven species of insectivores and rodents ten of which are endemic have been met in the Reserve of Marotandrano. The Rattus rattus species has been met in the most damaged site. Rattus rattus is an indicatory species of deterioration; it is very prolific and is in competition with the endemic taxa and put them in danger at any time.

The flora

The big part of the reserve is constituted by the sempervirente forest of average altitude and a closed formation with a dense cluster of 20m to 30m. It generally constitutes a canopy, represented by species of Slonea, Tambourissa, Eugenia, Ravensara,; an intermediate stratum of 15m to 18m and characterized by the abundance of young stems of Syzygium of Eugenia ravensara or Tambourrissa, Ocotea, Mammea and finally a constituted herbaceous stratum essentially by the Tsingialivolo and the Velatra. The lines of crest and the sides present a more closed vegetation structure. The forest of shallow shelters stems of bigger diameter.

73 families with three endemic and 157 kinds with 35 endemic have been counted in Marotandro. The endemicity of the species adjoins the 100%. Two palms, Dypsis procera and Dypsis Louveliis are part of the list of the note - link - and of the IUCN of the threatened species.

The history of a natural reserve

Marotandrano is part of the network of the National Parks of Madagascar, managed by Madagascar National Parks. It was classified Special Reserve in 1956.

The region of Marotandrano has a dry and cool tropical climate. Its humid and short hot season from November to March. Its dry and cold season from April to October. The yearly average temperature is 23°C.

The forest of Ambiniviny is located on a damaged relief presenting deep narrow valleys, the abrupt sides and the lines of crest oriented North-South. The region is characterized by wavy lateritique highland with the "lavaka" on the "tanety" (plains).

A threatened reserve

Marotandro is crossed by several rivers and is sowed with marshes. Two big streams take source from the region one of which is in the East side , the Simianona, and one in the West side, the Sofia. A sempervirente dense humid forest , case of exceptional natural landscapes, shelters endemic species. The conservation of this forest is important for Marotandro because its deterioration would put in danger all fringe of the biodiversity of the park. Among these threatened species, we can see the Indri indri or Babakoto lemurs and the Varecia variegata variegata. The Tsimihety live in the region of Marotandro. They depend closely on the resources of the reserve that is weakened due to it. Bush fires, illicit wood cuttings, reclamations and lemurs' hunting are very frequent in this region.

Associating conservation and communal projects

In order to limit this quasi-daily recourse of the inhabitants to the products of the forest, Madagascar National Parks associates the conservation with various communal projects and generating activity of incomes. So since the Program Environmental PE , microprojets of development has been financed through the 50% of the entry fees (DEAP), but also by Conservation International. The townships of Ampatakamaroreny, Marontandrano, and Ambodiadabo benefitted from new schools, dam of irrigation, police station and the promotion of the apiculture.
