The forest of Sambirano essentially covers the reserve. It is the natural habitat of Eulemur macaco macaco, endemic lemur of Lokobe. The history of the park
Queen Soanaomby was the first to defend the wealths of Lokobe, because in the Southwest of this forest, in Andranotsinominy, the tomb of King Andriamaitso was erected. The Malagasy respect of the ancestors thus consecrated Lokobe. In 1913, Lokobe kept the particular attention of the colonial administration. That year, it took the statute of Reserve. In 1927 Lokobes became a fully-fledged Complete Natural Reserve and the Malagasy administration completed the protection of its biodiversity in 1966.
Madagascar National Parks has taken the reins of the forest in 1995. Currently, Lokobe is about to become a National Park.
The preservation of the forest of Sambirano
The protected area of Lokobe is covered mainly by Sambirano forest, and its density is still appreciable as it is around that of the humid evergreen forest of medium altitude found near Ranomafana. Natural Reserve of Lokobe is the main range for Dypsis ampasindavae (Dypsis ampasindavae, from Ampasindava) and Dypsis nossibensis, which are the natural habitat for Eulemur macaco macaco endemic of Lokobe.
Sustainable preservation of habitat and Eulemur macaco macaco species which possible termination would call into question the representativeness, not only the North but also at national level, is essential. Indeed, these species of flora and fauna are found nowhere else.
