Ranomafana
The national park of Ranomafana is between the regions of the Haute Matsiatra and Vatovavy-Fitovinany. It is the link between the South and the East by the forest passageway that joins it into the Andringitra National Park. This park is known for the water of the spa of Ranomafana that permits curative treatments. GPS 47°18' to 47°37' of East longitude and 21°02' to 22°25'

Ranomafana, a whole foresty park, spreads on 41,601 ha. It was classified World Natural Heritage of the Atsinanana in 2007. It shelters a big wealth in endemic biodiversity but in danger. We can see the rare species there and seriously threatened lemurs. The park is also the genetic reservoir of some rare and endemic plant species. It is browsed by many rivers that are the affluents of the Namorona stream.

The history of the park

The Ranomafana National Park was inaugurated on May 31st, 1991. It is already a favorable place for the scientific research thanks to the existing infrastructures in the park. Thus about fifty national and international researchers do some research every year. The Betsileo and Tanala live in Ranomafana. Their traditions and rituals contribute to enrich the value of the park.

Ranomafana, where the hot water flows and the current passes!

The water of the spa of Ranomafana takes its source in the park. Its sulfurous composition is a real therapy for some illnesses. People comes from the four corners of the island to follow a curative treatment in Ranomafana.

The park is crossed by several rivers, affluents of Namorona. It is a whole hydrographic network that was born in this forest. The hydroelectric power station of Ranomafana on the Namorona river nourishes in electricity the regions of Fianarantsoa, Ambalavao and Mananjary, with a total production of 18.7 MW,
