The Park National of amber Mountain is located in the North. This islet of verdant forest is a havre of freshness that escaped the stuffy heatwave of this region. The Mountain of amber, home of endemism, that is part of the seven protected areas the most visited in Madagascar. GPS: 12°31'’ to 12°44’ of South latitude and 49°03’ to 49°13’ of East longitude .
The national park of the amber Mountain spreads on 23,010 ha of which 18,200 ha for the National Park and 4,810 ha for the Reserve Special Forest of amber. It is a volcanic massif covered of forest spreading on 850 to 1,475 m. Six lakes and several streams and rivers furrow the park.
The Amber Mountain is a high place of endemicity with 77 species of birds, seven species of lemurs and 24 species of amphibian.
The best of the fauna of the Amber Montain
1. Haliaeetus vociferoides or Madagascar Fish Eagle. It is one of the rarest birds of prey in the world.
2. The Madagascar Crested Ibis or Lophotibis cristata.
3. Phaner furcifer or The Eastern Pitchfork Lemur .We can find this noctural species in the rain forest.
4. Hapalemur griseus occidentalis, the smallest of the diurnal lemurs
The Amber Mountain counts 1,020 plant species listed. The forests of the mountain are populated of palissander, of Canarium madagascariensis or Ramy and Chrysophyllum, Famelona. These big trees serve in the pharmacopeia. We can find there the ferns, orchids, pandanus and various palms that make the amber Mountain a crucible of biologic diversities.
To visit the park, wear hot clothes and walking shoes. Make your provision in food and bottle of mineral water in Antsiranana. The nearest banks are in Antsiranana which also has health centers and hospitals. Antsiranana is covered by the telephone networks of orange, Zains and Telmas and have cybercafés.
The history of the park
Even before the independence of Madagascar, the forest of Amber already attracted the attention of the colonial administration. In 1958, the Mountain of amber was classified, National Park under the management of the Direction of Waters and Forests, by the slant of Sorting Forest protective Service of Waters and Forests of Antsiranana. The Antakaranas and the Sakalavas live in the outskirts of the Mountain of amber.
As in most famous places, the Mountain of amber has its sacred places and its places. Several streams cross the park and water the city of Antsiranana and its surrounding. They are the Besokatras, Saharenana, Irodo, Antomboka, Andranofanjava, Sandrapiana, Andongoza, Andohan'Ankarana. The Mountain is staked out famous cascades like the Big high cascade of 80 m, the Small cascade and the cascade of the Antakaranas. Five lakes are located within the park and in the Special Reserve of the amber forest. every year, the Mountain of amber supplies 50,000,000 m3 of drinking water for the city of Antsiranana.

The microprojects of Montagne d'Ambre
The Amber Mountain is 35 km from Antsiranana, and 1000 km from Tananarive. we can can go there by car, by boat or by plane.
On road :
Antananarivo -Amber Mountain . It is a journey of 20 at 21 hours by private car and 23 to 25hours by taxi-brousse. The road is practicable, but there exist the rain gates from February to March. The NR6 can sometimes be closed for a short length.
Take the national road N° 6. Turn to …1000 Km of Antananarivo! Or the simpler, to 12 Km before arriving in Antsiranana. Drive on with 32 Km until Joffreville and continue on a secondary road of 3Km to arrive to the entry of the park.

- We can take the boat occasionally in the harbor cities. The duration of the crossing depends on the boat as well as the distance between the boarding port and the landing one
- Take the boat only in dry season.
By plane :
The Air Madagascar company assures a regular flight to Antsiranana. The airport of Arrachard-Antsiranana is in the periphery of the city, 9 Km from the city on the National Road N°6. We have the choice between:
- Rent a car to join the Amber Montain park by car.
- Taking a taxi-brousse toward Joffreville at the road station of Antsiranana located by the exit of the city,
Contact the drivers of the bus directly for " a special" and join the entry of the Park.
Six circuits make the tour of the Amber Mountain. The weight of the luggages is limited to 20 kg for all types of circuits. The tariff of the carriers must be negotiated.
|The circuit of Ampijoroana

Distance : 3,1 km
The circuit drives toward the station of the roussettes that is a zone of experimentation of the introduced plants, especially the species coming from South America and west Europe . It continues via" the Way of the one thousand trees ", former forest station where the trees are aligned. Finally, the circuit finishes in the sacred cascade of Ampijoroana where the Tambohitra population does some rituals. It is also the circuit to meet the reptiles and lemurs.

|The circuit of Mahasarika

Distance : 2,7 km
You will see exceptional species through this circuit otherwise it is the shortest circuit. In the West of Antsiranana, you will appreciate the mouth of Indian Ocean and the Mozambik Canal. You may catch sight of two diurnal lemurs: Eulemur coronatus and Eulemur rubriventer.

The circuit passes by the big lake before arriving on the top. On the roof of Antsiranana, admire the view of the Park then notice the separation between the humid part of the amber Mountain and the arid one. It is a magnificent panorama in dry season in the month of June. It is a good circuit to admire the birds.

An ecoshop sells the articles of souvenir, tee-shirt, and movies about the park. About forty English-speaking and French-speaking guides work in the park.

Trekking , birdwatching and bathing will make your days in the Mountain of amber. But the surounding of the park also offers other interesting discoveries. At the South East of the Park that's Anivorano, visit the sacred lake of Antagnavo and the red Tsingy. East of Antsiranana, take advantage of the beach of Ramena, the Sakalava Bay, the bay of the Dunes, the bay of emerald, and the beauty of the mountain of the Franças. Every year, in April or May, the island of Nosy Be welcomes the Donia festival. The music of Madagascar and the islands of the ocean Indian will delight your evenings, very animated. Donia is the most famous festival of the region; 6.000 people come there every year.
