Travel shrewd...

Several places are sacred in Andringitra and its surrounding, due to the deep link that the custom is sealed with the ancestors. The region also has some taboos; pork meat and its derivatives are forbidden in the whole Park. Washing black pots in a river is a taboo. Washing mourning clothes is also forbidden in all rivers of Andringitra.
Bring hot clothes and a raincoat in your suitcases, the time is fickle in Andringitra. Provide yourselves with good walking shoes for the trekking. Think about supplying yourself with drinks and canned foods in Ambalavao.

The nearest banks are in Fiarantsoa.  In emergency,a health center in Namoly and the hospital of Ambalavao and can accomodate you. The telephone networks of orange and Zain cover the region. Several calling spots exist inside the Park.

The Park history

The Complete Natural Reserve of Andringitra was founded in 1927. In 1998, Andringitra became a National Park which was inaugurated in 1999. It is one of the six classified Parks in 2007, as World Natural Heritage of the Atsinanana by UNESCO. Andringitra is the country of the Betsileos. This tribe lives with the rice cultivation in terrace and breading. The tribe of the Barabory live in the western part of the Park, and the Baraharonga in the East which are descendants of the migrants coming from the Southeast of Ivohibe.

A forest corridor

Andringitra is joined to the Special Reserve of the Ivohibe and to the National Park of Ranomafana throught to a forest corridor of 180 km. This corridor is an authentic shelter for fauna and flora. Situated on a high crystalline plateau, Andringitra is formed on the west by the gneiss of Amboropotsy and to the east by the magmatic granite. A series of huge rock domes and chain of rocks with the narrow bones draws themselves on the heights, giving a moonscape

Fresh and rainy

The heart of the tourist area is the coldest: temperatures ranges from -7°C to 25 °C. The weather is capricious in altitude: how unforeseeable would you expect the drizzles! February is rainy in the Andringitra and August and July are cool. The eastern side that has a humid tropical climate beats the records of rainfall with 4,000 mm of rain per year. The average temperature is 21º C. The west suffered a fœhn effect, a hot dry wind. The rivers of Zomandao, an affluent of the Mangoky, Menarahaka and Iatara, affluents of Manampatra and Rienanas furrow the Park.
