The history of a special reserve
The Special Peak of Ivohibe was created in 1964. With the National Park of Andringitra, it has been identified an important site in the Malagasy Environmental Action Plan. The Reserve is located in the Rainy Malagasy forest with elements of the center and the High Mountains. A forest passageway of about 20 Km connects the peak of Ivohibe with the park of Andringitra.
The Peak of Ivohibe is a zone of condensation and fetching of water. The reserve depends on the massive forest of the region in which it assures the protection against the progress of the deforestation. The forest of low altitude (775 - 900 m), the forest of average altitude (900 - 1700 m) and the forest hall is the priorities of the conservation of this reserve.
The peak of Ivohibe culminates up to 2 060 m. the East of the forest has a humid tropical climate. The west is hotter. The season of rain is between the month of November and March, the dry winter between June and October. Several rivers and affluents of Menarahaka and Iantara take their source from the massif of Ivohibe and come to water the surrounding villages.
The Betsileo and the Baras live around the Ivohibe peak. They are breeders of zebus and farmers who are dependent on the reserve and its forest resources. Reclamation, bushfires, hunting of birds and lemurs are some current activities in this region.

The microprojects of Ivohibe
By road :
From Antananarivo, take the National Road N°7 toward Toliara. Bifurcate in Ihosy for Ivohibe on 110 Km, or 130 Km with the deviations. It is a secondary road in a very bad state.
The office of The Madagascar National Parks is found at the same Ivohibe peak. The difficult access and the enclavement of the reserve don't encourage the possibility of a visit yet.
